The owners of a General Practice reached out to us because they had recently taken over the practice after the previous owners retired.

They knew there were different risks with the practice and wanted to ensure that they were properly protected, telling us they “didn't know what they didn't know”, and that was keeping them up at night. 

The practice had 4 owners, and they had a number of contractor doctors who'd been hired under different arrangements.  They had a great Practice Manager who they had 100% confidence in.

Challenge:

They knew that their legal documentation needed a review and wanted to get it all up to date to provide them with a stable foundation for the practice to grow; they also wanted to understand the legal risks in their practice (and therefore sleep better), have more quality time with their families, it was really important to them to provide value to the members of their wider community, and they wanted to be rewarded for their efforts too.

The first step was to understand where they were, we had a call to talk it through with the owners and Practice Manager and then with their accountant.

Next, we reviewed the practice’s existing legal documents and provided a comprehensive project list for us to work through with the Practice Manager.

Working through this list together, the practice now has the confidence to grow, knowing that they have a stable legal foundation. This is good for everyone involved – the owners, their team, their patients, their families and also their broader community.

Outcome:

  • Alignment of expectations between the practice and its stakeholders

  • Reduced risk of conflict (because the legal documents are clear)

  • If a future conflict arises, there is a clear and well-drafted document that sets out the rights and obligations of both parties
